Dance
Photographing dancers is wonderfully similar to so much of the sports work I’ve done. Catching dancers at their peak is the same challenge as catching a gymnast in perfect form, or the tennis player at the peak of their swing. Dress rehearsals are best for getting photos, and with smaller dancers, it is good to freeze the group in a comfortable pose, so everyone’s limbs are in synch.
Theatre
My minor at UGA was drama, so I have a special love of documenting theatre. My sports lenses are perfect for the low light of the stage, and I usually put the images online, so that the entire cast can view or purchase the images. As with the dance photography, rehearsals are the best time to photograph these productions.
Music
As a young UGA student, I started doing music photography for the student newspaper, the Red and Black. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of capturing many of the best musicians with my cameras: BB King, Kenny Rogers, Vassar Clements, REM, B-52s, Bonnie Raitt, Widespread Panic, Mother’s Finest, Muddy waters, Dizzy Gillespie, Chubby Checkers, George Jones, John Prine, Dave Brubeck, Randall Bramblet, and so many more.
My clients for musical images range from the UGA school of music (where I sponsor the Third Thursday Series) to Capricorn records (where I’ve done CD covers and posters for Widespread Panic). I’m the official photographer for the Athens Symphony, and the Ashford Manor Concert Series, and have done work for Maxwell Sound Studios and John Keane in the Athens area. This is an area of photography that I love to pursue!
